Cisco, you are really screwing up. Suing researchers is not going to make you secure. Alienating the security community is not going to encourage people to come to you and report problems and work with you.
- Raven Aalder, Network Security Specialist, @ Defcon
As you may (or may not) know, I work at Cisco. Needless to say, this Michael Lynn story has been a bitter pill to swallow ever since it broke out this past week. I know for a fact that Cisco is pretty open and professional about divulging details around security vulnerabilities in their products. That’s why this incident is so bizarre and I have no idea how we let ourselves land up in this PR mess. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit disappointed and clearly I am not alone. Anyway, as bad as it looks right this second, I am convinced that we as a company will bounce back stronger and wiser. We always do.
Wish us luck. I am certain we will need it
Update (08/01/2005):
Michael Lynn gives his side of the story (Wired News: “Router Flaw Is a Ticking Bomb”)

Anand, as another Cisco citizen I echo your words. We are quick to learn and surely we will make up for this. Amen !
