Do you think you will retire as an IT professional?

I am an IT professional by choice. Not because it was the hottest thing in town at the time I completed my undergrad. I actually like it a lot and would not trade it for anything else (well, almost anything else
). However, there are days when I wonder if I will be able to retire as someone in this profession some 30 odd years from now. Gosh, 30 years sounds like an eternity when you consider what Silicon Valley (if not the entire US, indeed the world) has gone through in less than 5 years. What do you think?

Are u happy? If you are then stick with it.
If not your where most people are. Not happy with pay or the type of work u do.
I personally love Computer Science, but I can’t seem to get paid to do it. I don’t think I will be able to get Computer Science job in the U.S. during the next 10 years or so.
I can only learn about *cough* five major technologies per year. I just can’t keep up with the Superman job descriptions despite getting low level genius scores on IQ tests (142).
Something is severely wrong when the only way I can make money is running my own business. I would much rather build robots, design new computers, create nanobots, or genetically engineer a smarter me.
If I can someday make enough on my own I will do my own research and considering the political climate I will simply use it for my own gain since I can’t even get a decent job.

I completely understand. I *hate* the way things are today too. And yes, something is terribly wrong somewhere. Wish I knew the “one” thing that would fix it all..:-(

we’ve stated using extreme programming in my office. Before christmas we had huge layoffs but the change in atmosphere since using XP has been remarkable. There’s a genuine buz about the place and the team say things like “I’ve had a really great day”. Its the first time in my 10 year career ive seen that!
will it keep people in the industry longer.. yes i belive it will. It promotes people interations, lifelong learning, and contant feedback. the sort of stuff that provides fulfillment.
