“Source” of DOS attack…:-(

As luck would have it, the day started off with many of us (here in States) losing an hour. If that was not enough, I soon found out from my dad that our blogs were apparently not happy - translation, they were dead, not responding, down. Upon my enquiry,I got an email from my Hosting company that apparently the problem was that someone was detected launching DOS attack our “nest”. Eeeeek!

Our provider detected an outbound dos attack from your system and we can confirm a 2GB outbound traffic spike for your server during the period in question. We will request that they unblock the IP now in hopes the attack has stopped. Please investigate the cause of this and get back to us ASAP.

Frankly, I was not sure what were they expecting me to do since I had no way to get onto the box! Also, since my site runs on a User-Mode Linux (UML), I was not sure if the problem was related to my “side” of the platform. Anyway, after almost 12 hours, things were finally online. However, I could not find anything suspicious. Guess I don’t know what I should be looking for. Do you?

Either way, this site was just about as dead as they come for almost all of today. Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience that this may have caused.

Note:

If you ever wanted to really learn as well as enjoy reading about DOS attacks, you should read Steve Gibson’s “The Strange Tale of Denial of Service Attacs against GRC.COM”. It’s quite a tale
